This volume explores the transformations that shape the physical environment in South Asia. The articles highlight the problems that contemporary architects must address – striving for authenticity, understanding history, and resolving the complexity of urban dynamics. Emphasis is placed on understanding the nature of the physical transformations and their cultural and social determinants in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, with references to neighbouring regions including Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, and Uzbekistan; and presenting the varied perspectives of leading historians, urbanists, artists, and architects.

Farooq Ameen studied architecture at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and UCLA. He is the Founding Director of the International Center for Urban Studies, Los Angeles.
